Why study this course?

Our Computing BSc (Hons) course is a professionally-focused degree, designed to equip you with skills relevant to the industry. You’ll learn the basics of commercial applications and programming skills sought by employers, as well as specialist topics of your choosing. There will also be opportunities to complete placements in the industry as part of your studies.

On graduating, you’ll be eligible to apply for Membership of the British Computer Society (MBCS).

Our Computing degree has been accredited with full CITP status by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. This accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by BCS. As a graduate of this course, accreditation will also entitle you to professional membership of BCS, which is an important part of the criteria for achieving Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status through the Institute. Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

 

With professional accreditation from the British Computer Society, this career-focused computing course is designed to equip you with knowledge and skills that meet the needs of the computing industry. You’ll learn the fundamentals of software development, such as application development, objective-oriented programming (eg Java and C#) and database development.

You’ll have the option to specialise in fascinating areas such as artificial intelligence, ethics or computer law. You’ll develop your IT proficiency, problem-solving skills and learn to apply this knowledge to real-life situations.

Throughout the course you’ll focus on sought after skills that are required by employers, such us unified modelling language and ASP.NET. You’ll also use state-of-the-art commercial software tools, gaining key technical skills that are in high demand throughout the industry.

In addition to the team of experienced teaching staff, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from industry experts. The Vice President of the multi-national company Telefonica has previously given a talk to our students. Some of our ex-students working in industry will also be invited to share their working experiences.

Course details

In addition to the University’s standard entry requirements you should have:

  • a minimum grades BB or CCE at A level (or a minimum of 80 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification, eg BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma/Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Progression Diploma or Access to HE Diploma of 60 credits)
  • English Language and Mathematics GCSE at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
    If you don’t have traditional qualifications or can’t meet the entry requirements for this undergraduate degree, you may still be able to gain entry by completing our Computing (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) degree.

If you hold relevant professional qualifications or extensive professional experience you will also be considered.

Accelerated study
If you have relevant qualifications or credit from a similar course it may be possible to enter this course at an advanced stage rather than beginning in the first year. Please note, advanced entry is only available for September start. See our information for students applying for advanced entry.

Accreditation of Prior Learning
Any university-level qualifications or relevant experience you gain prior to starting university could count towards your course at City University. Find out more about applying for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

English language requirements
To study a degree at City University, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you require a Student visa (previously Tier 4) you may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. This course requires you to meet our standard requirements.

If you need (or wish) to improve your English before starting your degree, the University offers a Pre-sessional Academic English course to help you build your confidence and reach the level of English you require.

You’ll be assessed through essays, individual coursework, exams, research projects and a final year dissertation. You’ll receive regular, supportive feedback throughout the course.
This course is accredited as fully meeting the educational requirement for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) registration.

On graduating, you’ll be eligible to apply for Membership of the British Computer Society (MBCS).

This course will help you grow professionally and prepare you for work in the field of application development as a professional programmer, software system developer, IT consultant, database designer or web application developer.

Our computer science and applied sciences graduates have go on to work at Deloitte, Cyberclan, the National Health Service (NHS) and Kent Police in exciting roles such as cyber security and software engineers, digital forensic support officers, IT system analysts, network field engineers, software developers and infrastructure and security managers.

This course is also excellent preparation for further study or research.

If you study your undergraduate degree with us, as a graduate of City University, you’ll be entitled to a 20% discount on a postgraduate course if you continue your studies with us.
